Hello Team!

Welcome to our 12th year! I hope everyone has had a great summer. We’ve got a lot of information to get out to you, and a bunch of events coming up! So we are going to hit the ground running!

1. Team Meeting - Wednesday September 22nd @ 7:00pm - There will be an ALL team meeting, to kick off our 12th season! Everyone please attend - bring your parents, bring your friends, bring your friend’s parents! We will be going over the schedule for the year, including the competitions we will (tentatively) attend! Also we will be going over the team handbook.

2. Spirit of Shrewsbury - We will be taking part in the following Spirit of Shrewsbury events rain or shine (it’s 467, so of course we should expect rain):

Oak St Expo on Saturday Sept 25th, set up will probably start at 8 or 8 :30 AM,. the event runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Family Fun Fest on Sunday Sept 26th, set up will probably start 8:30-9 AM, the event runs 11 AM to 4 PM.

Both events will take place at Oak Middle School. Please wear your team jersey, and come for all or part of the event. We will need help to show off and explain our robot and to sell popcorn and food to the public in order to raise money for our team and spread awareness of Shrewsbury Robotics. While you don’t have to be there all day both days, we would like all team members to show up for at least part of the time!

5. Clean Up Day - Saturday October 2nd - 11am - 5pm - Come and have fun and help clean up and organize the FIRST area!

6. Pie Sale and Bake - November 20th - We will once again be baking and selling Apple Pies as a fundraiser. Please come and help us peel and bake! If you are not a Lego coach, you will need to sign up for a baking shift.

7. Mindstorm Mayhem - Saturday December 4th will be our 4th annual Lego Robotics competition! We require all team members to come that day, and the Friday evening before for setup, to help us make our competition the best in the state! This year, we will be an official FIRST qualifying event - 16 teams from our competition will qualify to go to the state tournament at WPI in December.

8. Fall Lego Coaches - We are looking for team member to help coach Fall Legos at Oak St Middle School. If you are interested please email Raj (rpatel@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us). Fall Legos will run Mondays and Wednesday from 3pm to 5pm. There will be a General Team Meeting for Legos on Wednesday October 6th, and Lego Class will start Wednesday October 13th.

9. Fall Classes - Starting Thursday October 7th 6:30pm - 9:pm and every following Thursday until December 16th- We will be meeting in the Robotics area to have Fall Classes. Classes will be split between returning members and new members. Returning Members this year will use this time to improve the design of our drivetrain form last year’s robot, so that come build season we can hit the ground running with a solid drivetrain design. New Members will learn to use all of the equipment and safety rules, while in the process of working on two projects. The first of which is the trophies for our MindStorm Mayhem Competition in December, the second project is building and new and simple cart for the robot.

If you have any question please email Raj (raj@shrewsburyrobotics.org)

Go Team!

Hello Team!

As you may know, this Saturday is Beantown Blitz at Northeastern University in Boston.

The pits open at 7:00am, with practice rounds starting at 7:15am, so our plan is to arrive at the school NO LATER than 5:45 to load the robot onto a vehicle and head out. We will have a limited number of vehicles traveling in that can take students, so any parents that can drive will be appreciated. We DO NOT have a bus going into Boston, so travel is up to you.

There will be a lunch provided by Northeastern, and we will have a small number of meals included with our entry fee, so please bring some $$$ so you can eat!

Go Team!

Hello All,

Our FIRST robotics team, “The Duct Tape Bandits” Team 467, did very well at the Chesapeake Regional in Baltimore, MD this weekend. This year’s game is called Breakaway, which requires the robot to kick full size soccer balls into a street hockey sized nets. Preventing the balls from just rolling into the net were ramps, 18-inch speed bumps- and oh yes- three 120lbs robots.

Each team had 11 qualifying matches and our team had a record of 9-1-1, which was the best ever. The scoring system was a bit different this year and that record placed us in 12th position out of 50 teams. In the elimination rounds, Team 467 was the captain of the 8th seed. And like March Madness, the 8th seed is paired against the 1st seed. The robot fought well but they was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

We should be very proud of every student on the team. They did an outstanding job representing the town of Shrewsbury and every company who sponsors them. They played hard and built an amazing robot. Although they did not win in the finals, they all stayed very positive. They got up and cheered for the other teams who fought for the championship.

All of the engineers, parents, and volunteers who worked with the team should be commended for the outstanding job they have done with our students this year. The team took 38 students, mentors, and adult volunteers to Baltimore for four days. Spirit was high as the entire Baltimore Convention Center enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Duct Tape Bandits!

We have a great group and I am very proud of each student on the team. The team’s positive attitude, gracious professionalism, creativity, and spirit is a testament to Our Team, Our Sponsors, and Our School.

Please join me and congratulating Team 467, The Duct Tape Bandits.

The next stop for the team is the Boston Regional at Boston University on March 26-27.

Thanks, Raj

Hello Team,

Sorry for the length of this message, but there is a lot of information below please ready it carefully.

Manchester - March 6th:
Those wanting to go to Manchester on Saturday March 6th and need a ride to the event please email Kush (kush@team467.org) before Friday afternoon, so that we can provide the necessarily transportation. We will be leaving at 7:30am from the High School- Gym Entrance. We will stay at the event to watch some matches and walk around the pits. We hope to leave before the Finals start in order to come home at a reasonable time.

Information Gathering Team (“Spying”):
For the upcoming Baltimore trip, those wishing to take part in the “Spy” information gathering team need to inform Kush (kush@team467.org) before next Monday’s meeting, so that Pit assignments can be arranged. Each student will NOT be assigned a series of team to research, instead the “Spy” team will take care of all these, in order to keep the information consistent.

Pit Duties:
Pit duties will be run differently this year as opposed to previous years. Each student will be assigned a half a day slot in the pit, giving six rotations of students though the pit during the entire competition. Student on the information gathering team will not be assigned pit duties. We would like to keep the pit relatively clear, meaning that if you are not assigned to pit duty please don’t crowd our 10ft x 10ft area (it is small when all the tool and robot are in place). If you are needed to repair the robot we will find you.

With the extra time given to team members this year, we would like them to make the time productive. We encourage all team members (mentors and students) to talk with other teams, learn from them, and make friendships. Students please try to get the mentors out of the pit to take part in the entire competition atmosphere. Feel free to look/take pictures of other team’s robot design, trade buttons, and other trinkets. There also needs to be a team presence in the stands to cheer our team and other teams on during the event to show team spirit.

Drive & Navigators & Coaches- Oh My!:
Lastly the drive teams have been decided. We have taken account information gathered during the entire build season, such as communication, knowledge of the rules, ability to work under pressure, respect of others, etc.. The Drive Team represent the entire team on the field, they are the people most in contact with other teams at the event. Drivers for Baltimore are Greg G.. and Osi V.(Whistler), navigators are Tyler M.(Supe) and Paula F., human players are Zack K. and Derek B.(Dustpan). Kush and Tsom will be the two Coaches at Baltimore.

As always if there are any questions please email Raj (rpatel@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us) or Tsom (tsom@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us)
